The finance function before you can afford one.

There is a stage where a bookkeeper is not enough and a full-time CFO is not justified. The accounts are being kept, but nobody is turning them into decisions: what the cash looks like in ninety days, which product line is actually earning, whether the pricing holds.

Scope

What the engagement covers

  • Management reporting — a monthly pack built for decisions: results against budget, the variances that matter, and what to do about them.
  • Budgeting and forecasting — annual budget, rolling forecast and the discipline of revisiting both.
  • Cash flow — a thirteen-week rolling cash forecast, working capital review, receivable and payable cycle discipline.
  • Costing and pricing — product and service level margin analysis, contribution and break-even.
  • Internal controls — approval limits, segregation of duties, and closing the gaps that show up in fast-growing companies.
  • Finance process design — a closing calendar, a chart of accounts that reports properly, and documentation that survives staff turnover.
  • Systems — specification and implementation support for accounting and ERP systems, and reporting built on top of them.
  • Lender and investor reporting — the schedules, covenant workings and data room material that get asked for.
Background

Where this comes from

This is not advisory learned from a framework. It comes from years inside the finance functions of large manufacturing and energy businesses — closing to group calendars, running cost centre and profitability reporting in SAP, building planning models and management reporting that senior people relied on.

Applied to a company doing a few crore or a few million in revenue, the same disciplines are lighter but the logic does not change. Know the numbers early, know what drives them, and make the decision before the quarter closes rather than after.

Format

How the time is structured

Monthly retainer

A fixed number of days each month: the close review, the management pack, and a standing call to walk through it with you and your team.

Project

A defined piece of work with an end point — building the budget model, redesigning the reporting, fixing the costing, preparing for a lender.

Transition support

Covering the gap while you recruit a finance head, and handing over a documented function rather than a drawer of spreadsheets.

Not sure which you need?

Describe the business, the size and what is bothering you about the numbers. If a fractional CFO is not the right answer I will say so.
